Pope man! And Altar Boy!

An interesting article in the Independent today.

During Pope John Paul IIs reign...

The head of the Vatican Office on the Family, Alfonso Trujillo, announced that condoms contain "tiny holes that let the HIV virus through." This is the same man who, only a fortnight ago, stood in for the Pope at a Holy Thursday ceremony at the Vatican. Consequently in El Salvador, the Church successfully argued for the printing of labels on all packets of condoms stating that they did not prevent HIV transmission. The Archibishop of Nairobi announced that not only did condoms allow the spread of AIDS, they caused it. The Vatican did not intervene.

As the number of allegations of child abuse against Church members rose, John Paul issued a directive demanding church 'secrecy.' No mentioning cases to the police or any other civil legal authorities.

He described General Pinochet and his wife as 'an exemplary Christian couple' and when the General was brought to justice for the tens of thousands of murders of socialists and democrats, John Paul called for his release.

He pledged to support the Reagan administration's attempts to topple the democratically elected Sandinista government with armed fascist guerillas because he associated the Sandinistas' socialism as the same authoritarian brand practisced by the Soviet Union. Both aetheist, both needing to be destroyed.

The article argues that these facts, though ignored by the Catholic apologists, will be what history remembers him by.
