Wasting money on crap
9:31 a.m. on 2005-02-19

My dad went to India yesterday. Three weeks, the lucky sod. I'm trying to organise a trip to China but that won't be until 2006 for a number of reasons, the biggest being it's going to cost a small fortune and I need to save.

On that note... it's so hard to be financially good! I've done it for all of a week now, and I'm knackered. A conversation with a friend got me thinking about the amount of money I spend on crap.

Food, mostly. In my last job, where we had a kitchen and a microwave and a sink and proper tables, I used to bring most of my meals to work. And if I got peckish, the canteen a few floors down sold really nice soup for a quid a time, and you got a big chunk of bread thrown in for free.

In my current office, we have a fridge, and that's it. And I've never been big on sandwiches. But I'm unimaginative when it comes to creating meals of my own, and instead end up going to Boots or Sainsburys and spending about a fiver a time on crap. Or worse, I'll go to Costa Coffee, where the food is crap and the service is rude, but hey, they do nice cakes.

Then there's Greggs, and their chocolate muffins. Oh, and the Millies Cookies place in the train station. And Starbucks sells great hot chocolate. And...

And I've realised I spend large amounts of money every month and yet have nothing to show for it. Except possibly high cholesterol.

So I'm trying to be good. It's not going too well so far (I had three days of sandwiches last week, then faltered and ended up in Starbucks spending a fiver on a ciabatta).

But I need to save! China! And stuff! Bad me.

This on top of the fact that some bastard somewhere managed to get my credit card details and spent 700 of my money on an online casino! Damn it! I'll get it back, eventually, but it's a right arse!
